It is with sincere regret that the Embassy has learnt of the death of Barbara Prammer, President of the National Council of Austria and former Minister for Women’s Affairs and Consumer Protection.

Ambassador Susan le Jeune d’Allegeershecque said:

Barbara Prammer was a courageous politician and an inspiring leader. She showed great dedication in supporting those whose voice is not loud enough and worked to strengthen minority rights. She made the Austrian parliament a more open and transparent institution, a legacy the whole country can be proud of.

This is a terrible and tragic loss for Austria. In this sad hour our thoughts are with the family and friends.

Mrs Prammer met the UK Speaker of the House of Commons, the Rt Hon John Bercow, last year as part of a democracy and youth outreach programme.
