Detail of outcome

The government response sets out next steps in implementing the expansion of undergraduate medical places in England. It also enables Health Education England and the Higher Education Funding Council for England to proceed with a competitive bidding process for the allocation of the remaining 1,000 medical school places.

Consultation description

The government proposes to increase the number of student places at medical schools in England by 1,500. The first 500 places will be allocated to medical schools and will be available to students in September 2018.

A further 1,000 places will be allocated through a competitive bidding process - this consultation seeks views on the allocation of these 1,000 places.

We are particularly interested in receiving comments on:

  • the proposed criteria that will be used to allocate the places between medical schools
  • whether medical graduates should be required to work in the NHS for a specified period of time, in return for the investment that the taxpayer has made in their medical education

The Higher Education Funding Council for England and Health Education England will work together to design the competitive bidding process for the distribution of places between universities. The responses to this consultation will inform that process, which will allow the government to take this policy forward.
