Amending the building regulations: electric vehicle charging infrastructure

Applies to England

Summary

Seeks views on proposals to support the installation of electric vehicle (EV) charge points in England.

This consultation closes at

Consultation description

Part S of the building regulations sets out the requirements for the installation of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in England. These regulations apply to all new buildings and those undergoing major renovations.

However, the EV charge point requirements within part S do not apply to enclosed or open-sided car parks.

This consultation, therefore, seeks views on the following proposals:

  • extending the requirement to install EV charge points to covered car parks
  • reviewing the £3,600 cap on installation, considering inflation changes since 2021
  • making wider changes to part S, subject to consultation responses

We are also seeking views on measures to improve access to EV charging for tenants and leaseholders in England.
