R&D Science and Analysis Programme - AI Skills for Life and Work reports
In summer 2023 the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and the R&D Science and Analysis Programme at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport commissioned a research project to explore the Artificial Intelligence skills needed for life and work in the UK.
The research began in November 2023 and completed in March 2025. It was carried out by a consortium of researchers at Ipsos, The Alan Turing Institute, The University of Warwick, and Perspective Economics. Ipsos led the consortium.
The research produced 11 reports that have used a mixed methods approach to look holistically at AI skills in the UK, from surveys of employers and the general public, to interviews with experts and analysis of vacancy and patent trends. Given the breadth of the work involved, we suggest starting with the summary report, then the public dialogue and drivers analysis, then the rest of the research.
