New Enterprise Allowance: information for mentors

What a New Enterprise Allowance mentor does, how to become one and details of the organisations that match new businesses with a mentor.

New Enterprise Allowance (NEA) can provide money and support to help people start their own business if they get certain benefits and have a business idea that could work.

NEA now provides support to some Universal Credit claimants with an existing business. This includes support from a business mentor.

What does a mentor do?

Entrepreneurs starting up their business with the help of NEA need mentoring support at a critical time during the development of their business plan.

Existing self-employed Universal Credit claimants, whose income from their business is low, could get mentoring support to help them increase their earnings and grow their business.

A mentor provides this support usually for a 12 week period. Face-to-face mentoring is required as part of this voluntary role.

You can gain from the experience of being a mentor. It can be as rewarding as getting your own business going.

How to become a mentor

The NEA programme is managed by different organisations (NEA providers) in different parts of the UK. These NEA providers match new businesses getting help from NEA with a mentor.

If you’re interested in becoming a mentor for entrepreneurs in your local area, please contact your local NEA provider.
