National mycobacterium reference service- South (NMRS-South)

NMRS-South is the reference laboratory for mycobacterium species.

This National Mycobacterium Reference Service-South (NMRS-South) provides several services to referral laboratories to the unit.

These include:

  • providing identification of Mycobacterium sp using Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS)
  • performing drug susceptibility testing, using both genotypic and phenotypic methods
  • a primary isolation service including culture, a Fastrack (PCR) service for detection of M. tuberculosis complex and detection of latent infection (IGRA)
