National mycobacterium reference service- South (NMRS-South)

NMRS-South is the reference laboratory for mycobacterium species.

The national mycobacterium reference service-South’s (NMRS-South) main activities include:

  • primary isolation service including microscopy and culture
  • fastrack (PCR) service for detection of M. tuberculosis complex and rifampicin (and multidrug) resistance
  • PCR-based rapid identification of mycobacterium sp isolates
  • drug susceptibility testing for first line and reserve drugs
  • molecular epidemiological typing and support of outbreak investigations/contact tracing
  • Interferon gamma release assays for detection of latent infection and diagnosis
