European passport return service
The European passport return service is for EEA and Swiss nationals to keep their passport while their online application is being processed.
The European passport return service allows you to request a participating local authority to photocopy your European Economic Area (EEA) or Swiss passport and send a copy to the Home Office.
You can only use this service if you have made an online application for a registration certificate or a document certifying permanent residence using an EEA or Swiss passport. You will not be able to use a national identity card.
Make an appointment
You must contact a local authority to book an appointment to use this service. They will be able to tell you what the appointment times are. You can also use the premium service centre in Belfast or Glasgow.

You should go to your appointment within 5 working days of submitting your application form online.
The local authority or premium service centre will tell you the fee you must pay to use this service.
What you need to bring with you
You will need to bring your:
- original passport
- a copy of your checklist
- a printed copy of your application form
Using the service does not guarantee the success of your application. Local authorities cannot provide any help on your application form or advise if you have fully completed it.
There may be instances where the Home Office could contact you to request for your original passport after you submit your application.
