You need a licence to keep firearms, weapons and ammunition for display or use in a museum.
How to apply
Write to the Department of Justice for Northern Ireland (DOJ).
You’ll need to include:
- why the museum is interested in firearms, weapons and ammunition
- details of the firearms, weapons and ammunition to be held
- information about the security precautions in place
- evidence that most of the museum’s funding comes from central or local government
- information on whether the museum is open to the public

You’ll only get a licence if DOJ is satisfied that the weapons, firearms and ammunition will not be a danger to the public.
Fees and charges
A licence costs £200 and usually lasts for 5 years.
It costs £75 to add another premises to a licence.
Conditions
The licence may include conditions about the safe management of the weapons, firearms and ammunition.
Fines and penalties
It’s a criminal offence to possess firearms or ammunition in Northern Ireland without Police Service of Northern Ireland permission. It’s also a criminal offence to break the conditions of a museum firearms licence.
