You must become an approved driving instructor (ADI) if you want to charge people for car driving lessons.

How much it costs

There are no fees payable to the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) to start the qualifying process.

You will need to pay to take the qualifying tests and to register when you have qualified.

Eligibility

You have to:

  • be 21 or older
  • have had your full driving licence for at least 3 years
  • have not been banned (disqualified) from driving in the last 4 years

What you need to apply

You must have a criminal record check to become a driving instructor. You cannot use one you have already - you must get a new one.
