Get a digital record of your exemption from immigration control

You can apply for a digital record of your exemption from immigration control if you do not normally need a visa to work in the UK.

Digital records of exemption have replaced exempt vignette stickers in passports. They are not visas.

You do not have to apply but it can help you to avoid delays when you enter the UK.

You can only apply if you’re exempt from immigration control.

If you have a valid exempt vignette sticker in your passport, you can continue to use it for as long as you remain exempt from immigration control.

Eligibility

You can apply if you’re:

  • a diplomat, or working for a diplomatic mission in the UK, and you were outside the UK when offered the post
  • an overseas government minister on official business
  • a member of Commonwealth or Overseas Territories armed forces posted in the UK or training in the UK
  • a head of state, or working for a head of state (for example, on a state visit)
  • exempt from immigration control for any other reason

Some family members might also be able to get a digital record of exemption.

Apply online

It’s free to apply.

The earliest you can apply is 3 months before you enter the UK.

Fill in the online form.

You may need to book an appointment at a visa application centre to provide your biometric information (fingerprints and photo). You’ll usually get your passport back on the same day.

You should get a decision within 3 weeks.

Documents you need

You’ll need to provide:

  • a current passport or other travel identification
  • a passport photo
  • evidence that you’re coming to the UK as part of your job (if relevant), for example, a letter from a UK or foreign ministry

How to use your digital record of exemption

If your application is successful, you’ll need to set up a UKVI account, if you do not already have one. This is how you’ll access your digital record of exemption.

Your notification email or letter will tell you what to do.

Your digital record of exemption is usually valid for as long as your visit to the UK, for example to do your job or attend an event.

It is linked to your passport and will be checked automatically when you travel to the UK.

You’ll be able to view your digital record of exemption and get a share code if you’re asked to prove your immigration status, for example when you travel to the UK or rent a property.

If your passport or personal details change you’ll be able to update them in your UKVI account.
