Electronic travel authorisation (ETA)

Get help:

You do not need an ETA if you already have permission to be in the UK - for example, a UK visa, indefinite leave to remain, or settled or pre-settled status.

If you do not know whether you need an ETA, use the check if you need a UK visa tool.

If you cannot scan your face or passport using the ETA app

If you’re having problems when you scan, you can continue without completing this step. This will not affect the outcome of your application.

If you’re having another problem using the ETA app to apply, read the ETA app guide.

You can apply online if you cannot use the ETA app.

Check when your ETA expires

An ETA lasts for 2 years or until your passport expires, whichever is sooner. The ETA expiry date is in your confirmation email from UKVI. If you did not get a confirmation email, check your spam or junk folder.

If you applied on another website and you did not receive a confirmation email, you will need to contact them.

You can travel to the UK as many times as you want while you have an ETA.

Contact UKVI

If you’re waiting for a decision, do not contact UKVI until 3 working days after you applied.

You’ll need your ETA reference number if you’ve already applied. You can find this in the confirmation email you received. If someone else applied for you, you’ll need to get the reference number from them.

Contact UKVI online.

UKVI cannot help with ETA enquiries over the phone.
