Your partner and children

You can include your partner and your children under 18 as ‘dependants’ on your asylum application if they’re with you in the UK.

Bring them with you to your screening appointment. Otherwise, you’ll need to send a request to add them to your claim.

Add your dependants or children to your claim

Your request must include the following information and evidence:

  • your full name, date of birth, and nationality
  • any reference numbers the Home Office has provided to you
  • the full name, date of birth, and nationality of your dependant
  • what your relationship is to the person who you want to include as your dependant
  • any evidence you have of your relationship to the person who you want to include as a dependant on your claim, for example a UK birth certificate for your UK-born child

Send your request to include a dependant on your asylum application by email or post.

If they meet the requirements, you’ll be given instructions on how to schedule a screening appointment to register them as a dependant on your asylum claim.

Your dependant will not be included on your claim until they’ve been registered at a screening appointment. This means that they may not be granted permission to stay if your asylum claim is successful.

Your dependant’s screening appointment

At the screening appointment, your dependant will:

  • be photographed
  • have their fingerprints taken, if they are aged 5 or over
  • have an interview to check who they are and where they are from, but only if they are over the age of 18

If your dependant is a child, their own protection needs will be considered. You’ll be asked if they’re at risk of persecution or serious harm on return to their country. They may get refugee status, humanitarian protection, or a different type of permission to stay from yours.
