The Science & Innovation Network (SIN) in Mexico works to encourage strategic relationships with local and national government, academic institutions, business associations and organisations in science, technology, and innovation (ST&I).

This collaboration aims to benefit both the UK and Mexico. The British Embassy in Mexico has a dedicated Science and Innovation Manager, who plays an important role in enabling these partnerships.

Mexico is currently the 13th largest economy in the world and has significant potential in emerging technologies. It is the second largest economy in the Latin American region and its internal demand is growing. This is evident, particularly in sectors that are of interest to the UK. These include energy, financial services, retail, and infrastructure.

Mexico has signed 14 Free Trade Agreements (FTA) covering 50 countries. The UK-Mexico FTA is currently under negotiation. Mexico has high levels of access to global trade and supply chains, providing significant opportunities for international collaboration.

Responsibilities and priorities

SIN Mexico’s priorities include:

  • providing access to UK expertise to support sustainable economic growth around the world
  • establishing technology-based partnerships with partners around Mexico, delivering mutually beneficial objectives and exploring new opportunities
  • developing technology solutions to local, common and global challenges through applied research
  • recommending the best of British technology expertise and leadership
  • improving UK policy based on international experience, emerging opportunities and challenges in collaboration with Mexico
  • stimulating strategic science collaborations with Mexico to achieve wider policy goals
  • harnessing Mexico’s international technology partnerships and investment
  • supporting collaborative development of UK’s priority technologies: artificial intelligence (AI), quantum technologies, engineering biology, semiconductors, telecoms, all supported by data
