Report your fishing activity in England and Wales

You must report your fishing activity if you have a salmon and sea trout rod licence.

Complete the yearly report if you had a licence at any point in the year – even if you did not catch anything or did not fish.

There’s a different way to report a catch return if you have a salmon and trout licence for commercial net fishing.

Areas you can report on

Use this service to report fishing activity on:

  • rivers in England or Wales
  • the Border Esk - including sections in Scotland
  • coastal waters

There’s a different way to fish and report activity on the River Tweed, through the River Tweed Commission.

Before you start

You can add to your report through the year or do it all in one go. You should submit your report by 31 December.

If you hold more than one licence during a year, add all fishing activity to the same report.

To complete the report you’ll need:

  • the last 6 characters of your licence number
  • your postcode
  • the rivers where you fished (if you fished in a stream or tributary, you just need the name of the main river)
  • the number of days you went fishing

For each fish caught, you will need to report:

  • the species
  • when and how it was caught
  • the weight (you can provide an estimate)
  • whether you released it or not

You’ll get confirmation your return has been submitted.

The data you and other anglers provide will be used to manage the number of fish in the rivers. You can read the fishing statistics reports.
