How to check if FTE needs to be confirmed

Step 1

Calculate the age of the child or young person

If today’s date is on or after 1 September following the child or young person’s sixteenth birthday, go to  

If today’s date isn’t on or after 1 September following the child or young person’s sixteenth birthday, there isn’t any need to confirm the FTE.

Step 2

If you know the customer’s Child Benefit reference number

  • access Child Benefit On-Line (CBOL)
  • tab to the next dialogue field
  • enter ‘CBO004’
  • select ‘Enter’
  • enter the Child Benefit reference number
  • select ‘Enter’
  • go to  

If you don’t know the Child Benefit reference number, go to  

Step 3

If there is a Child Benefit record, go to  

If there isn’t a Child Benefit record, go to  

Step 4

Access CBOL, if you aren’t already in CBOL

  • tab to the next dialogue field
  • enter ‘CBO006’
  • select ‘Enter’
  • tab to the ‘NINO’ field
  • enter the customer’s NINO
  • enter a ‘Y’ in the ‘fastpath to CBOL’ field
  • select ‘Enter’

If there is a Child Benefit record 

  • tab to the next dialogue field
  • enter ‘CBO004’
  • select ‘Ctrl and *’ together on your keyboard
  • go to  

If there isn’t a Child Benefit record, go to  

Step 5

You are now in the Child Benefit record

  • select ‘F4’ on your keyboard. You will be taken to the ‘Child Details’ screen
  • make a note of the AR code number as shown in the end column for this young person
  • make a note of the EX date for this child or young person as shown in the column headed ‘Latest Inc/EX’

If the AR code showing is ‘AR9163’, ‘AR9165’, ‘AR9193’ or ’AR9198’, go to  

If the AR code showing isn’t ‘AR9163’, ‘AR9165’, ‘AR9193’, or ‘AR9198’, there isn’t a need to confirm the FTE.

If there isn’t any AR code showing for the child or young person,there isn’t a need to confirm the FTE.

Step 6

Compare the ‘EX’ date on the ‘Child Details’ screen to today’s date.

If the ‘EX’ date is after today’s date, there isn’t a need to confirm the FTE.

If the ‘EX’ date is on or before today’s date, the FTE needs to be confirmed.

Step 7

On the tax credits computer, access the customer’s claim and navigate to the ‘Children’ screen to check if ‘FTE’ is showing to the right of the child’ or young person’s details

If ‘FTE’ is showing to the right of the child’s or young person’s details, the FTE needs to be confirmed.

If ‘FTE’ isn’t showing to the right of the child’s or young person’s details, there isn’t a need to confirm the FTE.
