How to check a child’s reference number on a Child Benefit claim

Changes to previous version - new guidance

Step 1

If you know the child’s or young person’s Child Benefit reference number

  • access Child Benefit On-Line (CBOL)
  • tab to the next dialogue field
  • enter ‘CBO04’
  • select ‘Enter’
  • enter the Child Benefit reference number
  • select ‘Enter’
  • go to .

If you do not know the child or young persons Child Benefit reference number, go to .

Step 2

If a Child Benefit record is found, go to .

If a Child Benefit record is not found, go to .

Step 3

Access CBOL, if you are not already in CBOL

  • tab to the next dialogue field
  • enter ‘CBO06’
  • select ‘Enter’
  • enter the customer’s NINO
  • enter a ‘Y’ in the ‘CBOL’ field
  • select ‘Enter’.

If a Child Benefit record is found

  • tab to the next dialogue field
  • enter ‘CBO04’
  • select ‘Control’ and ‘*’ on your keyboard at the same time
  • go to .

If a Child Benefit record is not found, there is no Child Benefit record.

Step 4

You are now in the Child Benefit record

  • select ‘F4’ on your keyboard. You will be taken to the ‘Child Details’ screen
  • the child’s reference number is shown on the far right of the screen.
