TCM1000248 - How to obtain or check a child’s reference number on a Child Benefit claim

Note: Child Benefit computer systems will be replaced by HMRC IT systems.

Step 1

To obtain or check a child’s reference number

  • access Child Benefit Service desktop icon
  • enter the customer’s NINO in the upper navigation bar and select ‘search’
  • check the customer’s name and address in the top left corner of the screen to ensure you select the correct customer details
  • check the child summary for details of the child
  • select ‘details’ to access the child’s reference number

Note: If a Child Benefit record is not found, there is no Child Benefit record.
