Background: PAYE service roles: introduction
The PAYE Service stores and allows maintenance of individuals’ tax records. All PAYE processing activity will be carried out using the PAYE Service. The PAYE Service role allocated to you will determine which screens you can view and / or update and which functions are available to you on the PAYE Service.
Work Management will be controlled by the roles allocated in two systems

Although the roles and access required for each system are distinct from each other, there is a dependency between them and it is essential that you are provided with the appropriate role in the PAYE Service to enable you to resolve work items allocated to you by the PAYE Work Management System.
It is likely that you will be allocated multiple roles in the Work Management System and only a single role in the PAYE Service.
The role given to you in the PAYE Service will ensure you have appropriate access to enable you to meet the requirements of the job and not impose a restriction in your ability to do the job.
The PAYE Service roles are defined by Central Administration and controlled by the ‘X500’ which holds details of users names, passwords and level of access. There are no specific PAYE Service administration roles and managers should follow usual procedures and submit requests for access to the PAYE Service by the IT requests page on the HMRC Intranet.
