Customs Handling of Import and Export Freight (CHIEF) export declarations: connection methods

The methods available are as follows:

  • a conventional telephone line and Modem (Modulator/Demodulator)
  • ISDN-2 line and interface board or terminal adapter
  • leased telecommunications circuit (this option would only be cost effective where large volumes of data need to be speedily transmitted) or
  • Internet e forms on and off line which can also be downloaded for completion

The trader will need software which convert data submissions/declarations into the required EDIFACT or XML message and convert the EDIFACT or XML response into a form that can be processed by their system.
