Understand area-based management tools under the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement

Find out about area-based management tools, including marine protected areas, and related measures under the BBNJ Agreement.

Understand area-based management tools

The BBNJ Conference of the Parties has the power to establish area-based management tools, including marine protected areas, and related measures in areas beyond national jurisdiction.

This may involve restrictions or controls on particular activities within a defined geographic area.

There are currently no proposed or established area-based management tools or related measures under the BBNJ Agreement.

All proposals will be subject to stakeholder consultation before any decision by the BBNJ Conference of the Parties.

This section will hold information on area-based management tools, including any relevant management measures, when any are established under the BBNJ Agreement.

Check whether this information may be relevant to you

This section may be relevant if you are operating a UK craft or carrying out activities that are subject to restrictions or controls under area-based management tools established under the BBNJ Agreement.

This section does not apply to UK activities taking place only in areas within national jurisdiction.
