How to find out information on our social impact activities and programmes.
Our social impact approach seeks to create shared value. This means securing a positive return to all stakeholders throughout the Sellafield system.
This ranges from the UK taxpayer, HM Government, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), local authorities, our supply chain and the communities in closest proximity to our sites.
It is not an add on, it is an expectation. Unleashing and securing the significant potential for shared value from the investment in Sellafield Ltd requires new, longer term and stronger relationships with our stakeholders, supply chain partners and communities.
Embracing new collaborations, partnerships and relationships will be fundamental to the collective success of West Cumbria and Warrington both economically and socially.
Creating shared value also requires acknowledgement of shared responsibility. Addressing the entrenched social and economic inequalities closest to our sites can’t be solved by Sellafield Ltd alone. Nor can we realise all the opportunities by ourselves.
Significant and permanent social change and economic resilience requires all stakeholders to work together, with intent and duration, in new ways and accepting we all have a role to play.
Our ambition to achieve the maximum possible social impact from our work at Sellafield is outlined through 6 objectives in our social impact, multiplied strategy, known as SiX, and requires direct and indirect contribution and support from our supply chain partners.
The social value chain’s objective is about creating social impact with our supply chain partners and increasing the impact, scale and duration of our activity.

Our social impact (SiX) strategy contains our vision, objectives and outcomes linked to the Sellafield Ltd Enterprise Strategy, to provide our communities and taxpayers with a socio-economic growth return on their investment at Sellafield.

Oxford Economics – The economic impact of Sellafield report
Oxford economics was commissioned in 2017 to produce a report that analysed the economic impact of Sellafield Ltd.
This was recently reviewed again in 2022 and provides an evidence base that supports the SiX strategy and its priorities.
West Cumbria opportunities and challenges report
The West Cumbria opportunities and challenges report was commissioned in 2019 by Sellafield Ltd and prepared by Cumbria Community Foundation.
The report looks at the opportunities and challenges facing communities in West Cumbria.
It provides a summary of the social needs and community issues, highlights some of the work already being done to address disadvantage and identifies opportunities for social impact investors to target their efforts and help our communities to thrive.

Volunteering commitment
A volunteering commitment is an allowance of hours a company commits to their workforce being able to use during their working hours to support the local community.
An allowance for workforce volunteering is generally a policy that most organisations adopt and will be one of our requirements to do business with us.
Together for Good
Together For Good is a platform designed to connect non-profit organisations with businesses and volunteers in our local communities in West Cumberland and Warrington.
Sellafield Ltd and its suppliers are committed to building more resilient and thriving communities and this platform will help to maximise the use of volunteers and enable businesses to monitor their impact.
If you are a business not linked to Sellafield, you can still have an account, it is not restricted. The only restriction is where the volunteering opportunities are.
We have also developed an app for volunteers to have a seamless experience which can be downloaded from the Together for Good website.
Third sector & non-profit organisation
We support third sector organisations and non-profits to promote opportunities they have where businesses, via their employees, can provide support on a voluntary basis.
The organisations must be delivering benefit directly in West Cumberland or Warrington to be able to access the services on the platform.
Companies
By helping to raise the visibility of what support is needed in our community this also supports businesses to achieve their commitment to make a positive impact in our communities.
Businesses can be based anywhere in the world, but the positive impact will be within West Cumberland or Warrington.
There will be opportunities that can be done face to face or remotely to make it accessible to all.
Companies within the Sellafield Ltd supply chain that have social impact commitments will be required to use the portal to match opportunities and record their hourly input to evidence their volunteering hours.
Companies can then benefit from this as a reporting tool and have greater visibility of the impact their workforce is having in the local community.
Individuals
You don’t have to be an employee of a business who is registered on the platform, individuals can also register so they can provide support in the local community in their own time.
The platform is free for everyone to use but you must register to create an account.
How to support third sector organisations
In response to the West Cumbria opportunities and challenges report a programme called Transforming West Cumbria was developed to support the local community.
This investment programme is taking on West Cumbria’s most entrenched social and economic problems and aims to put local people in charge of their own futures by empowering neighbourhoods to create transformational change.
The Cumbria Council for Voluntary Service (CVS) also have volunteering opportunities that are county wide, you can identify suitable opportunities within our priority areas:

How to engage in schools as part of your social impact commitment
Primary school engagement
If you have a contract with us, you must use the Primary Business Partnership to engage with local primary schools.
The partnership was established to support the 103 primary schools in West Cumbria and help businesses by coordinating activity within schools.
This ensures equal access for all schools to the wider business community. This is managed by the Centre for Leadership Performance.
Any activities you plan to carry out in schools should be planned via this route.

Secondary school engagement
The Link Cumbria was established to support the 16 secondary schools/colleges in West Cumbria and help businesses coordinate activity within schools.
This ensures equal access for all schools to the wider business community. This is managed by Inspira.
Any activities you plan to carry out in schools should be planned via this route.
The Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership (CLEP) careers hub offers a range of opportunities in West Cumbria for organisations and their employees to engage and benefit from partnership with local schools and colleges.
This includes initiatives like the Enterprise Adviser Network.
Information on supporting employability skills
The Copeland Work and Skills Partnership
The Copeland Work and Skills Partnership work to raise employability skills, provide training opportunities, and support individuals to overcome personal barriers.
This is led by Copeland Borough Council to jointly deliver key interventions.

All Together Cumbria supports businesses with resourcing challenges by identifying, attracting, recruiting, redeploying and retraining local people.

The Centre for Leadership Performance provide information on access to opportunities in West Cumbria.
They work with businesses to help opportunities reach the youth in the local area. They also deliver set programmes for job seekers.

Our funding projects that drive economic growth
Barclays Eagle Lab Cumbria
Barclays Eagle Lab Cumbria are based in the redeveloped Bus Station in Whitehaven and supports start-ups and scale up business with a network of coworking spaces, mentors and learning tools, as well as events and growth programmes for ambitious entrepreneurs and businesses.
Industrial Solutions Hub
The Industrial Solutions Hub (iSH) is based at Leconfield Industrial Estate, in Cleator Moor, West Cumbria.
The solutions hub brings together Sellafield Ltd, its supply chain partners, academia, national bodies and research facilities into a business cluster to focus on real life problem-solving and practical applications, creating an ecosystem to encourage and foster successful business start-ups and nurture small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) development, strengthening the resilience of the Cumbrian economy.

BEC builds communities by reinvesting profits from their property portfolio to deliver lasting regeneration, low carbon and social outcomes that positively impact our communities.
