Guidance

Share free breakfast club daily attendance data

Information about how to share free breakfast club data with the Department for Education (DfE) using Wonde.

Applies to England

This guidance is for all schools that are delivering free breakfast clubs funded by DfE.

 It explains how:

  • to share your free breakfast club attendance data with us daily
  • to submit the data
  • we protect it before we share it

Why sharing daily data is important

All schools taking part in the free breakfast clubs programme must collect and report information about free breakfast club provision and attendance as part of the school census.

This is set out in the The Education (Information About Individual Pupils) (England) (Amendment) Regulations 2026, which require you to provide information that includes:

  • the number of days on which your school offered free breakfast club provision
  • how many eligible pupils attended

We also encourage schools to share this data with us daily from their management information system (MIS) using Wonde.

Daily data-sharing helps us assess the programme’s impact and learn more about what works in delivering free breakfast clubs for pupils.

In turn, we’ll share the collated data with schools in an interactive, user-friendly dashboard hosted on view your education data. We’ll share more information about how to view and access this service in due course.

As set out in the free breakfast clubs guidance, schools are expected to:

  • consider how to encourage sustained take-up among children who are vulnerable to food poverty and hunger, or those who require extra support in areas such as attendance, behaviour or wellbeing
  • use their knowledge of pupils and families to promote inclusive access and ensure the offer reaches those who need it most

Regularly reviewing take-up data and identifying attendance trends will help you meet these expectations.

How you can share your daily data

The easiest way to share free breakfast club attendance data is using Wonde.

Wonde has asked schools to agree to share free breakfast clubs attendance data through its portal. Once a school agrees, it will connect with the MIS to extract and securely transfer the data to DfE automatically each day. This will include any changes to the data from previous days.

If your MIS supplier does not yet have a free breakfast club field in their register, it will be adding that soon. In the meantime, continue to maintain your own daily attendance register for your free breakfast club.

To share data:

  1. Go to your Wonde portal
  2. Select ‘DfE’.
  3. Review the request to share data.
  4. Accept the request.

If you have any queries about using Wonde’s secure portal, email support@wonde.com.

There are no costs involved for schools in sharing data through Wonde.

Each MIS supplier’s system operates differently. Contact your supplier if you have any questions about how to record free breakfast clubs data in their system.

How data protection legislation affects data-sharing

The United Kingdom General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018 provide certain safeguards on the use of personal data by organisations such as:

  • DfE
  • local authorities
  • schools

UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 set out the rights of those about whom data is held, including:

  • pupils
  • parents and carers

This includes the right to know:

  • which types of data are being processed
  • why it is being processed
  • who it will be shared with

For the purposes of data protection legislation, the term ‘processed’ applies to any activity involving personal data, such as:

  • collecting
  • storing
  • sharing
  • destroying

Collecting pupil-level data

All data we collect is subject to a privacy notice. No information that identifies a child will be shared publicly.

We use pupil-level data to identify:

  • national, regional and local trends
  • patterns in free breakfast club attendance
