Recognition of natural mineral water inside and outside the UK

List of all natural mineral waters recognised in the UK and how to apply for recognition of UK mineral waters in the EU, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein.

This guide includes:

  • a list of all UK natural mineral waters recognised in the UK and how to add, withdraw or update recognised natural mineral waters
  • a list of GB natural mineral waters recognised in the EU after having been recognised by a EU member state
  • rules that apply to sell UK natural mineral water in Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales), Northern Ireland, the EU, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein
  • rules that apply to sell EU, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein natural mineral water in the UK

The natural mineral waters list:

  • lets the local authority know which producers can advertise their product as a natural mineral water
  • stops producers from duplicating names

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) updates the list when it’s notified about:

  • newly recognised natural mineral waters
  • withdrawal of recognition of a natural mineral water
  • changes to the trade description or the name of the spring

If you want to get a natural mineral water recognised to produce and sell in the UK, read the guidance Natural mineral water: how to produce and label.

Check the different types of bottled water if you’re not sure which type you have.
