The rail infrastructure is a complex set of systems that have to work together to make sure trains operate safely and efficiently.

Training opportunities

You could work as a junior signal technical engineer which involves:

  • undertaking surveys of the signalling equipment
  • analysing technical data on signalling equipment performance
  • maintaining records of signalling diagrams and control systems
  • preparing specifications
  • helping with method statement preparation and/or plans for design work and requisition materials

Types of apprenticeships

This is an advanced level apprenticeship. You’ll work in specialised roles like:

  • junior track technical engineer
  • track technician
  • junior signal technical engineer
  • signal technician
  • junior telecoms technical engineer
  • telecoms technician

Apply for a rail infrastructure engineering apprenticeship

You can become an apprentice in England if you’re:

  • 16 or over
  • eligible to work in England
  • not in full-time education
