Production of coatings apprenticeships

Types of apprenticeships that you can apply for in the production of coatings sector.

Coatings are everywhere: on our jackets, walls, cars and computers, to name just a few places. They play a part in a broad range of industries from automotive to construction.

Training opportunities

Generally, coatings are broken down into 5 categories: decorative, industrial, powder coating, printing inks and wall coverings.

As an apprentice your duties will depend on your employer. You could work as a:

  • production operative: responsible for operating manufacturing equipment
  • quality control operative: assisting in product manufacture and customer queries
  • junior laboratory technician: helping with research and product development

On an advanced level apprenticeship you’ll have more responsibilities including some supervisory roles and more contact with customers.

Types of apprenticeships

There are 2 types of apprenticeship.

Intermediate level apprenticeship

You can train in roles like:

  • production operative
  • process technician
  • senior production operative

Advanced level apprenticeship

You can train in roles like:

  • quality controller
  • quality assurance manager
  • production manager
  • coatings laboratory technician
  • quality controller
  • product development/technical manager
  • colour matcher
  • senior chemist

Apply for a production of coatings apprenticeship

You can become an apprentice in England if you’re:

  • 16 or over
  • eligible to work in England
  • not in full-time education
