North east public health laboratory: services
The public health laboratory for the north east is based in Newcastle.
Public health laboratory Newcastle provides enteric bacteriology for the investigation of community outbreaks; bacteriological and virological testing for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs); mycobacterial diagnostic and virology testing. The laboratory works closely with the host trust to provide an effective public health service.
The laboratory in Newcastle is also home to the Regional Centre for Mycobacteriology which provides tuberculosis screening and diagnosis for the north east region and mycobacteria reference services for the north of England. In addition, the in-house Research and Development section drives innovation in response to changing requirements in diagnostic and epidemiological microbiology.
