Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games

Guidance and tips for fans, families and teams travelling to the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

There will be large numbers of spectators and fans travelling to Queensland, Australia, in April for the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. Accommodation on the Gold Coast as well as in the surrounding areas will be in high demand around the time of the Games.

If you are planning to travel to the Games, we advise that you organise your trip early.

Before you go…

  • you need a visa to enter Australia: if you have a British Citizen passport, you can apply for an eVisitor visa directly from the Department of Immigration & Border Protection or apply for an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) via your travel agent or airline

  • your passport needs to be valid for the proposed duration of your stay: if you are transiting other countries, be aware that many countries require at least 6 months validity remaining on your passport

Travel Insurance

Before travelling make sure you have suitable travel insurance and that your policy covers you for any activities you plan to do.

Transport at the Games

The Gold Coast is approximately 77km southeast of Brisbane in the State of Queensland. There will be various ways of getting into and around the Gold Coast and Brisbane area during the Games. This includes walking, cycling, driving or public transport.

However, there will be no parking at venues and some roads will have restricted access. Consider using public transport, which is included in the cost of your Commonwealth Games tickets, if you have them.

To avoid disappointment, we advise that you plan and book your visit as early as possible in advance of your arrival in Australia.

More information on getting around at the Games is available on the Commonwealth Games website.
