Efficiency technologies - Maritime Innovation Hub

Improving performance, reducing operating costs through evidence led innovation.

The UK Maritime Innovation Hub supports industry in developing, testing and adopting technologies that enhance vessel and fleet efficiency. Our focus is on safe innovation, regulatory clarity, and data driven operational improvements across propulsion, hull performance, onboard systems and operational optimisation.

We act as a coordinated focal point for innovators, bringing together Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) specialists, technical experts and industry partners to help accelerate the transition to more efficient, lower emission maritime operations.

How we support efficiency improvements

Early guidance and regulatory navigation

Efficiency technologies often span safety, engineering, training, environmental and operational requirements.

We help organisations understand:

  • which regulations and standards apply to their concept or system 
  • the wider context of energy efficiency for shipping, including domestic and international policies, and resulting market trends
  • what evidence or modelling maybe required to demonstrate compliance or benefit
  • how efficiency gains intersect with safety, operability and lifecycle considerations

Trial and demonstration enablement 

Many efficiency solutions require real-world testing to validate performance.

We help innovators: 

  • develop structured trial plans, including test matrices and key performance indicators (KPIs)
  • identify safe operational envelopes and risk controls 
  • design data collection strategies that support credible verification 
  • coordinate early engagement with MCA specialists where required

Technical and operational evidence development 

We work with partners to shape the evidence needed to understand and validate efficiency measures, including: 

  • propulsion upgrades or hybridisation 
  • hull form improvements, coatings and drag reduction technologies 
  • energy saving devices (ESDs) 
  • digital optimisation tools such as routing, condition based maintenance and real-time monitoring 

Our focus is ensuring trials generate decision grade evidence that can support operational adoption, commercial cases and regulatory acceptance where needed.

Systems integration and assurance considerations 

Efficiency technologies can interact with multiple systems across the vessel.

We help organisations consider: 

  • integration with existing propulsion, control and monitoring systems 
  • interfaces with power management and onboard energy systems 
  • human factors impact, including workload and operability 
  • requirements for documentation, assurance or verification during testing and rollout
