This advanced level apprenticeship covers the installation and maintenance of a range of systems and services in new and established buildings.
Building service engineers must balance the need for a comfortable indoor environment with other issues like safety and energy efficiency when working with:
- air conditioning and ventilation
- water supply and plumbing
- lifts and escalators
- electrical power systems
As an apprentice you’ll work towards engineering technician status and aid engineers in their work. Your duties may include:
- discussions with clients and architects
- preparing designs on computers
- estimating costs
- supervising installation
- maintenance and repair
Building services engineers often specialise in one function, so the nature of your work will depend on your employer, but you’ll develop and enhance the technical and management skills in a variety of applications and job roles, from design to installation and servicing to project management.
Successful apprentices will have qualifications that can contribute to professional recognition as an engineering technician with the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers and the Institution of Engineering and Technology.
