Applying for an SIA licence if you have changed your gender

How we handle licence applications for people who have changed their gender.

We have a dedicated ‘sensitive applications’ process for licence applicants who have changed their gender. You can use this to:

  • apply for a licence for the first time
  • renew an existing licence
  • replace a licence where there is a change in name and gender

Sensitive applications are handled personally and in the strictest confidence by either a licensing manager or a licensing specialist. You can speak directly to them if you have any questions or concerns.

We will liaise directly with the disclosure bodies when we conduct our criminality checks to ensure that any previous names do not appear on the disclosure certificate produced.

Please email sensitiveapplications@sia.gov.uk if you wish to use this process. When you do, please provide the following information:

  • your current full name
  • your previous name
  • any previous SIA licence or application numbers

We will respond within ten working days.

You must wait for a reply from this email address before submitting an application. If you do not then your application will be dealt with outside of the sensitive application process.
