Countries using capital punishment have decreased by more than a third in the last decade. Many countries share the UK’s aim of worldwide abolition, and progress is being made: 21 countries have abolished the death penalty for all crimes since 2002. In Uzbekistan, in accordance with the Presidential Decree of 1 August 2005, the death penatly was abolished since 1 January 2008.

Also in 2012, the UN General Assembly’s biennial resolution calling for a moratorium on the death penalty was passed with 111 votes in favour – more than ever before.
