The competition, organised in collaboration with the iCentre and open to everyone in Brunei’s talented design community, was to create new artwork to decorate the High Commission’s Prius – replacing the vivid rainforest hues (designed by ISB students) which the car has sported for two years.

The theme of the competition was ‘Innovation and Research’. The High Commission wanted their car to be read as a tribute to Brunei’s growing Knowledge Economy.

British High Commissioner to Brunei H.E. Rob Fenn said:

I love the new look, but it was hard to pick a winner. There were four or five designs which I would have been proud to use. And every single entry showed that Brunei Economic Development Board and the iCentre are onto a good thing, by nurturing creative talent in Brunei. The jury were impressed by the imagination, flair, and sheer variety of ways in which entrants interpreted our theme.

All three judges placed the winner first, however. Personally, I liked the colour mix in the winning design; its use of knowledge economy artefacts to unite Britain and Brunei symbolically on the side panels, and its use of uncluttered spaces too, which allow the car’s clean lines to show through. I would like everyone who sees this car to think: yes, Britain and Brunei is an old story, but the chapters to come are full of life and invention.
