To mark this special occasion, the British Ambassador to Guatemala, Her Excellency Sarah Dickson, said:

On International Human Rights Day the UK pays tribute to those individuals and associations that promote and strive for the protection and realisation of human rights and fundamental freedoms for all. We are strong supporters of the EU Guidelines on Human Rights Defenders and attach great importance to the work of Human Rights Defenders across the world.

We are proud of British NGOs’ and their work in Guatemala. We also take this opportunity to congratulate the work of the Guatemalan Human Rights Ombudsman, whose efforts we stand ready to support tackle the human rights challenges ahead.

We also thank Guatemala for its support for the UK’s re-election to the UN Human Rights Council. The UK has had a productive relationship with Guatemala at the UN Human Rights Council and the 3rd Committee of UNGA this year, jointly tackling some of the key international human rights challenges of the world.
