UK encourages greater trade with Zambia
Justine Greening, UK Secretary of State for International Development visited Zambia on 9 and 10 July
During her recent visit to Zambia UK Government Secretary of State for International Development, Justine Greening, met the Vice-President, the Finance Minister and business people.
Among other things she discussed the UK’s links with Zambia, on trade as well as development assistance. And, drawing on her own background in business, she discussed how best to create jobs through attracting foreign investment.
The UK has a strong and longstanding relationship with Zambia and is committed to collaborating and partnering with Zambia to encourage more UK investment that can bring jobs and wealth to the Zambian economy.
The Secretary of State said:
Our assistance programme to Zambia amounts to over 600m kwacha a year. This is increasingly focussed on activities to promote economic development, working with local Zambian businesses.
However, the developing world needs more than aid. That is why we support free trade initiatives across Africa and the world. And we are pushing for full implementation of the Bali trade facilitation accord.
We would like to see more UK trade with Zambia. We are boosting our capacity to advertise commercial opportunities here in Zambia to British companies. I am extremely pleased that our specialist trade and investment promotion body, UKTI, will shortly be re-establishing a permanent presence here in Zambia. “In the next few months we expect to see two trade missions coming from the UK.
