Trade mission to South Korea promotes UK’s low carbon expertise
UK energy efficiency expertise in retrofit and Green Deal on show to Korean organisations during UK-Korea Green Building forum.
UK-Korea Green Building Forum
Supported by UK and Korean governments, UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) South Korea recently hosted a Green Building and retrofit trade mission for UK delegates. These included:
- UK companies
- Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC)
- academics
- architects
They participated in the first UK-Korea Green Building forum on 11 February 2014, as the main UK speakers to a crowd of over 200 Korean delegates. This was its first initiative after the mutual agreement between DECC and Korea Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport signed during the state visit to seek collaboration on the low carbon sector.
Korean delegates were particularly keen to learn more of the UK’s Green Deal policy. Korea has set a target of:
- a 30% reduction in carbon emissions by 2020
- achieving zero-energy housing by 2025
During the state visit by President Park last November, the UK suggested energy efficiency in buildings as a possible area for sustainable cooperation between 2 nations. The UK has considerable expertise, in particular on:
- retrofitting existing buildings
- rolling out Green Deal mass home insulation initiative
The mission also visited Seoul Metropolitan Government to talk about Seoul City’s building retrofit projects and had field tours to green building projects recently constructed in Songdo and Ilsan.
Future green building events
This visit was the first in a series of UKTI’s programme in the green building sector.
UKTI Seoul will run a catalogue show in October 2014. This aims to showcase the UK’s excellence in the green building and retrofit sector displaying UK companies’ catalogues in the biggest green building exhibition in Korea.
Coinciding with EcoBuild 2015 a green building mission will come to the UK in March 2015. UKTI Seoul expects to bring a number of Korean delegates to the UK to exchange ideas and possible cooperation in public and private areas.
