The first Honiara International Film Festival
British High Commission with other diplomatic missions hosted an international film festival together at the National Museum Auditorium.

When was the last time you had the opportunity in Honiara to watch award winning films from around the world and experience them in a ‘big-screen’ atmosphere? Well hundreds of people did just that last week at the very first Honiara International Film Festival.
Films from Australia, Japan, New Zealand, UK and USA were all shown throughout the week to enthusiastic audiences – in fact the audiences were so enthusiastic that they often broke out in a spontaneous round of applause. The films included Oscar nominated ‘This Way Up’ from the UK, British Academy Of Film & Television Arts (BAFTA) winner ‘Whale Rider’ from New Zealand, Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) winner ‘The Sapphires’ from Australia, and Japanese Academy winner ‘Sumo Do, Sumo Don’t’ from Japan.
The festival was based at the National Museum Auditorium which was converted into a cinema for the week-long festival, with specialist equipment brought in from Australia. The festival was supported by the diplomatic missions from the countries mentioned above and the films were specially flown in to Honiara for the festival.
It is hoped that this will be the first of what will become an annual event that can be enjoyed by the people of Honiara for many years. Who knows, maybe in the future the premier of the latest James Bond film might be held in Honiara!
