The British Foreign Secretary William Hague will visit Turkey on 20 November to mark the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attack against the British Consulate-General in Istanbul. The Foreign Secretary will pay tribute to the victims of the attack, and underline the UK’s commitment to tackling terrorism.

Programme Outline:

  • the Foreign Secretary and Foreign Minister Davutoğlu will attend a commemoration event at the British Consulate-General on 20 November

  • the Foreign Secretary will meet with Foreign Minister Davutoğlu

During his meeting with the Turkish Foreign Minister, the Foreign Secretary will discuss how the UK and Turkey can deepen their cooperation on counter-terrorism. He will also discuss the current situation on the ground in Syria and reaffirm the UK’s commitment to working closely with Turkey on fighting all forms of terrorism.

The Foreign Secretary said:

“I am in Turkey to commemorate the victims of the terrorist attack against our Consulate-General in Istanbul ten years ago. Thirty two people were killed by two car bombs and hundreds injured on that dark day. Ten years later, we remember these victims and the many more affected by this indiscriminate terrorist attack. Many FCO staff and their families continue to make huge sacrifices working in dangerous parts of the world. I pay tribute to the service they render for their country.”
