Sweden launches Scholarship for study in UK
The Lord Mayor of the City of London is visiting Stockholm to promote the financial hub of Europe.
This week, Lord Mayor of the City of London, Alderman Roger Gifford, is in Stockholm to promote the City of London as the financial hub of Europe and launch the Mansion House Scholarship in Sweden.
The Mansion House Scholarship Scheme funds scholarships for students and young business executives from overseas to travel to the United Kingdom to study or to undertake training or work experience in the Financial Services Sector.
The Scheme was established in September 1998 by the then Lord Mayor, Alderman Sir Richard Nichols. Each year the Lord Mayor travels extensively, promoting the City of London as the world’s leading international financial and business centre and a place where business students from around the world should aspire to visit, to study and ultimately in which to invest and do business.
The Scheme has now been running for fifteen years and successive Lord Mayors have now appointed a hundred and fifteen Mansion House Scholars, with recipients selected from forty four countries. Awards vary in size but have usually been in the region of £5,000 to £7,500 and restricted to those applying to study or to undertake training in the financial services sector or in subjects related to financial services. The majority of scholars take Masters Degrees at British Universities, whilst others attend training courses or undertake business attachments within the City of London.
During their time in the UK, they meet many members of the City’s financial community, as well as attending at least one of the formal events hosted at Mansion House by the Lord Mayor.

The Scheme is administered as a Charitable Trust. Advisers to the Scheme include an Alderman, the Master of Birkbeck College and two retired City bankers. The selection of scholars remains in the personal gift of the Lord Mayor, based on recommendations by the Ambassadors and High Commissioners in those countries he visits.

Scholarship quick facts:
- the scholarship is restricted for those applying to post graduate study or undertake training in the Financial Services sector or related subjects
- applicants must be graduates with at least a Bachelor’s degree or better
- students can study for Masters degrees at British Universities, attend a training course or undertake internships with firms based within the City of London
- students must have secured their own offer of admission at preferred school or course
- the scholarship is worth up to £7,500
