Government House reception celebrates ‘common bonds.’
St Helenians living the Falkland Islands have celebrated their national day at a reception at Government House.
Guests enjoyed St Helenian culinary treats at the event on St Helena Day - May 21st - which marks the anniversary of the discovery of the island in 1502.
St Helenians, or “Saints” as they are known, make up 10% of the Falklands population and their contribution to the Islands is vital.
Acting governor Sandra Tyler-Haywood said that apart from very different climates, the Falklands and St Helena had much in common: “This reception – on such an important day for Saints - is an opportunity to celebrate those common bonds not just as UK Overseas Territories but also as island people.”
