Her Majesty’s Ambassador Denis Keefe visited Valjevo on 15 December 2014 to commemorate Flora Sandes, a member of the British medical missions who were helping Serbia during the First World War and the only British woman to serve as a soldier in the War.

The fifth stop of Ambassador and his wife Kate’s pilgrimage started with the Mayor Stanko Terzic with whom he laid wreaths at the monument to Field Marshal Zivojin Misic, commander of the Serbian Army in the Kolubara Battle, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the victory in the Battle.

Ambassador then visited Valjevo Grammar School, where parts of Valjevo Hospital were situated during the epidemic of typhus, when members of British medical missions came to help threat citizens and soldiers.

The visit ended in the National Museum of Valjevo where, among other artifacts, they are preserving a tent of the WW1 field hospital, as well as Field Marshal Misic’s war room, together with a clock he received from the Commander of British troops at Salonika front.
