Princess in Moscow to honour the Fallen

Princess Royal, Princess Anne, today began an intensive two-day programme in Moscow following her visit to the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics.

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

Her engagements included laying a wreath to the Fallen at Russia’s Eternal Flame in the shadow of the Kremlin Wall, followed immediately by a visit to the British Embassy, which she had officially opened in May 2000, on the banks of the Moscow River.

Accompanied by her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, she met both British and Russian staff and then unveiled two plaques - in English and Russian - honouring those who have sacrificed their lives in conflicts since World War One.

Next stop on her tour was Moscow’s Anglican Church of St Andrew where Canon Simon Stephens introduced her to senior members of the church and groups of parishioners.

The Princess toured the building – which in Soviet times was taken over and used as a recording studio because of its famed acoustics – taking in a number of groups and projects, starting with a drop-in on the St Andrews playgroup. She then met staff who run various projects including those offering help to some of Russia’s 600,000 young people in care and to underprivileged youngsters, including through education programmes.
