On February 6, 2015, Head of DFID- Kenya, Lisa Phillips, attended the official launch of the Online Transactional Mining Cadastre Portal (OTMCP) by H.E. Deputy President William Ruto. The launch marks sustained activity to revive and modernize the mining industry in Kenya according to internationally accepted mining rights principles. The OTMCP is an international state of the art portal that has been developed in partnership with UKaid through the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID).

The OTMCP will be used to process applications for mining rights and deal with pending applications. It is a transparent tool that includes a public interactive map of all mining licenses indicating exact location, ownership, status and tenure. Investors can access the portal and apply online anytime from anywhere. The system prevents conflicts by avoiding boundary overlaps and by recording the exact time of application thereby serving the ‘first come first served’ principle of the Mining Act
