Hurricane Ike funding decision letters ready for collection

The 235 Turks and Caicos Island households battered by Hurricane Ike in 2008 find out if EU funds will rebuild their homes.

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

Residents of Grand Turk, Salt Cay and South Caicos were identified by the United Nations as most in need of assistance after Ike and Hannah struck. They can now collect letters advising them of the initial outcome of their applications from their respective District Commissioners’ offices.

The initial decision is that 107 households from the 235 applications met the criteria for the €5m of EU funding. Those who feel that these criteria have not been properly applied in their case has until Friday, 31 May 2013 to appeal the decision. It is intended that the full confirmed list of beneficiaries will be publicly released on Thursday, 13 June 2013 by the EU Ambassador to Jamaica, the Bahamas and the TCI, Paola Amadei. Rebuilding work is to be completed by October 2014.

“This is an important stage in rebuilding the homes and lives of our residents on the worst Ike damaged islands,” said Governor Ric Todd. “It is also a symbol of the growing international confidence that the TCI has improved its governance in recent times and is confidently striking out in a new positive direction.”

Applicants are asked to bring ID (driver’s license, NIS card, passport number, nationality card) with them to collect their letters, as these will only be handed to the applicant or to an individual authorised to collect the letter. This authorisation should be in writing, give the telephone number of the applicant, be signed by the applicant and give the name and identity number (drivers license, NIS card, passport number, nationality card) of the person who will collect the letter.
