Chevening alumna Mrs Miria Matembe meets British High Commissioner to Uganda HE Alison Blackburne before her departure for the UK to attend the Chevening programme's 30th anniversary event.

On 9 July 2014 the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) hosted a major event to celebrate 30 years since the foundation of its prestigious Chevening Scholarships scheme. The centrepiece of this event was a lunch hosted at Chevening House by FCO Minister Hugo Swire MP, for 30 prominent Chevening alumni. Miria Rukoza Koburunga Matembe, a former Ugandan Minister of Ethics and Integrity and Member of the Ugandan Parliament, was amongst the invited guests at this lunch. Mrs Matembe is a prominent regional consultant on women in politics, and a founder member of the Centre for Women in Governance. She has also served as a Member of the Pan-African Parliament, representing Uganda.

Mrs Matembe studied law at the University of Warwick during academic year 1996-1997, as a Chevening Scholar.

The celebration on 9 July also included a wide range of exciting activities in the grounds of Chevening House, the Foreign Secretary’s country residence which gave the Chevening Scholarships scheme its name. Famous British musicians and other performers entertained guests at the event. Guests were also able to record personal messages in the “Chevening experience booth”, view the #MyChevening Instagram exhibition and search the new alumni online directory to find out more about Chevening partnerships.

Before she left for the UK, Mrs Matembe visited the British High Commission in Kampala. She met the High Commissioner, HE Alison Blackburne, who wished her an excellent visit to Chevening House.
