The British Ambassador in Ukraine Simon Smith hosted a pre-departure reception to honour this year’s scholars from Ukraine. Presenting them with scholarship awarding letters, he said:

This year is the 30th anniversary of the UK’s Chevening Programme. Over this time, this programme has given over 42,000 thousand young people from all over the world the opportunity to study in Britain, acquire new knowledge and enhance their leadership potential. Today you have become part of this special community.

I hope that you will make most of this opportunity and, in addition to successful completion of your study programmes, you will also get to know more about modern Britain and make lots of new friends. I also hope that your time in Britain will encourage you to feel that you have a strong role to play both in the future development of your country, and in sustaining successful and rewarding partnership between Ukraine and Britain.

This year’s scholars told us what they expected from their studies in Britain.

Sergiy Benedysyuk:

I will be doing LLM European Law at King’s Collage in London. Studying in the UK is a great opportunity to understand the European Union’s and Great Britain’s legal principles, doctrines and political processes. My ambition is to promote the rule of law, respect for human rights, and fair and equal rules for politics and business in my country.

Anatoliy Tsyrkun:

I believe that British education will be the most important investment in my professional growth. I will be studying MSc Tourism Management at Bournemouth University. It gives me a unique opportunity to join the global network of leaders. I will share my new knowledge and experience back in Ukraine, contributing to my country’s development as well as to strengthening cooperation between the UK and Ukraine.

Andriy Kobzarenko:

I will be studying MA Conflict, Development and Security at Lancaster University. To study at a British university and to be in Britain paves a way to learning to see my professional domain of foreign policy analysis under a different angle. Being selected for the Scholarship makes me feel privileged and makes me confident that I can help Ukraine move forward.

Roman Fishchuk:

Becoming a Chevening scholar makes me feel privileged! I will start a Master’s course at one of the oldest British universities – University College London (UCL). I am confident that the UCL’s interdisciplinary approach will help me get most of this year. Realising that I will be studying in London – one of the most diverse capitals in the world – makes me feel even more excited!

Sergiy Kosinov:

I consider it a big privilege to be awarded the Chevening Scholarship to do my MA Political Communication at the City University London. This Master’s degree will give me a leading edge to address properly the democratic development needs of Ukraine and to work more effectively in the field of public administration.
