Launching the Chevening scholarship programme in Pakistan for the 2014/15 academic year, the British High Commissioner to Pakistan Adam Thomson said:

Chevening scholarships offer talented Pakistani nationals the opportunity to study for a post-graduate qualification in the UK. Students who came to the UK benefit not only from our world class universities but also from our dynamic, vibrant and multicultural society. Our universities also benefit from having such top professionals study with them.

Over the past 30 years the Chevening scholarship programme in Pakistan has enabled more than 1200 Pakistanis to study in the UK. These students came from across Pakistan and from many sectors, including local and central government, business and industry, civil society and the media. We are proud of Pakistani Chevening alumni and the important contribution they are making towards Pakistan’s development. This demonstrates that Chevening not only brings immediate benefits for individual scholars but also long-term benefits for both Pakistan and the UK. It is a sign of the strong bilateral relationship between our two countries.

The UK is committed to working in partnership with Pakistan at all levels of education, from primary level to university. Education is Pakistan’s biggest asset and the UK’s largest investment. These scholarships are an important part of our wider engagement on education in Pakistan, which includes training teachers, building schools and increasing primary school enrollment.
