As part of its commitment to environmental conservation and the search for different strategies that help combat climate change, the British Embassy Quito signed an agreement with the Institute of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energies (INER) through which the “2050 Pathway Calculator” project will be developed in Ecuador. INER’s Executive Director, Eduardo Noboa and Ambassador Patrick Mullee signed this important cooperation agreement.

The 2050 Pathway Calculator was originally developed by the Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC) in the United Kingdom, and it is a tool that allows future energy scenarios to be built as well as experimentation with different ways of reducing carbon emissions. The 2050 Pathway Calculator has multiple uses. It serves as technical support in the creation of public policies, as well as a research source for academics and students interested in knowing how to implement efficient and sustainable energy projects.

DECC itself will give technical and logistical support to INER’s team which, as part of the agreement, has committed to complete the project in one-year time. Also, the INER team has been invited to attend the International Conference on the 2050 Calculator, set to take place in Taiwan in February 2015. This will allow the team to get to know best practices in the development of the 2050 Calculator by other teams around the world such as China, South Korea, South Africa, Belgium, India, among others.

It is expected that early 2015, INER’s 2050 developers can visit the Colombian team who are currently in the last stage of completion of their 2050 Calculator project. This will allow to get a deeper knowledge of the mechanisms and resources needed for the efficient implementation of the calculator.

The British Embassy Quito is proud to collaborate with INER in the development of this project, which we are sure will be highly beneficial for the national strategies to boost the usage of clean and renewable energies.
