The British Embassy in Rabat has launched its Ramadan campaign 2013 to raise the awareness of British tourists visiting Morocco during this period and encourage them to show respect for the rites and customs in the holy month of Ramadan which coincides this year with the summer peak season. Each year, nearly 300,000 British tourists visit Morocco and the number is rising.

To ensure that British visitors are aware of the special nature of Ramadan, the British Embassy has developed leaflets with information and tips on culture, traditions and rules to follow during the month of fasting. These documents will be distributed to tour operators, travel agencies, airlines, hotels, restaurants, tourism offices and other key locations in Agadir, Marrakech, Rabat and Tangier with suggestions on how to make them available to their customers. In parallel, and in order to reach the widest audience possible, a communication campaign will be launched on the net using mainly the Embassy website and Facebook page.

Alan Gogbashian, Charge d’affaires at the British Embassy, said “British tourists are usually aware of the importance of Ramadan, due to the presence of a large and important Muslim community in Britain. But this campaign is designed as a reminder, to ensure that British tourists can enjoy their holidays in Morocco while respecting the local customs in this special month of Ramadan”.

This is the third year in which the British Embassy has run its Ramadan campaign. In previous years the British Embassy worked with local authorities, tourism operators, civil society and media to make this campaign a success.
