British Embassy in Dushanbe held an event on Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative on 11 June 2014.
The Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative (PSVI) was launched by UK Foreign Secretary William Hague and UN Special Envoy for Refugees Angelina Jolie in 2012. The Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict was centered in London; however all British Embassies from around the world have also host the summit locally in different dates starting from the 10-13th June 2014. The global summit brought together representatives from the governments that have endorsed the UN Declaration of Commitment to End Sexual Violence in Conflict.
In order to support the Global Initiative, British Embassy in Dushanbe organized a photo-campaign, where Ombudsman of the Republic of Tajikistan Mr. Zarif Alizoda and his staff together with Her Majesty’s Ambassador Mr. Robin Ord-Smith and other Embassy’s colleagues have taken a photograph with the PSVI motto in order to raise the PSVI profile on social media.
In addition, British Embassy in Dushanbe held an event on the 11th June at the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe offices. Participants have been invited from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ombudsman’s Office, Institute of War and Peace, UN Women, representatives from Women Committee, Mullahs from Religious Committee, representatives from relevant NGOs as well as Tajik women that witnessed the 1992-1997 Civil War in Tajikistan.
Oynihol Bobonazarova presented a paper on the fate of Tajik women during the Civil War in Tajikistan.
Key recommendations obtained from the discussion were fed into the Global Summit London.
British Embassy in Dushanbe recognizes the importance of this topic particularly in Tajikistan and intends to launch a project in collaboration with relevant government and non-government institutions of Tajikistan.
