British and Uzbek Officials discuss support to Afghanistan
On 22 January 2015, Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Afghanistan, Sir Richard Stagg KCMG visited Tashkent to discuss prospects for Afghanistan’s future.
On 22 January 2015, Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Afghanistan, Sir Richard Stagg KCMG visited Tashkent to conduct meetings with government officials, senior experts and academics to discuss prospects for Afghanistan’s future. Sir Richard Stagg is the most senior British official heading the United Kingdom’s engagement with Afghanistan. His visit was an opportunity to discuss how the international community, including Afghanistan’s neighbours in Central Asia, can support the government of Afghanistan in delivering political and economic security.
Sir Richard Stagg met Mr Alisher Kurmanov, First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan. They discussed further cooperation in assisting the government of Afghanistan in its efforts at building a stable, secure and prosperous nation.
Sir Richard Stagg also met senior experts from a number of organisations including the Institute for Strategic and Regional Studies and the Centre for Regional Security Studies. He also talked to students of the University of World Economy and Diplomacy where he spoke about co-operation between the UK and Afghanistan, and continued British economic and military assistance after the withdrawal of ISAF forces.
Sir Richard Stagg joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 1977. He has served in Sofia, The Hague and Brussels. Sir Richard was appointed British Ambassador to Bulgaria in 1998 and served there for three years. He sat on the Foreign Office Board from 2002 – 2007. He was British High Commissioner to India 2007-2011. In April 2012, Sir Richard Stagg was appointed as Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Afghanistan.
