British Ambassador and Vice-Mayor of Shenyang launch biggest ever celebration of UK-Shenyang links.

The British Ambassador to China Sir Sebastian Wood and the Vice Mayor of Shenyang Huang Kai today (24 October) officially opened the ‘UK in Shenyang Week’ at the prestigious Palace 66 Mall.

‘UK in Shenyang Week’ is a celebration of the best the UK has to offer. The Week consists of a number of fun events for the public, including an exhibition of award-winning photos, a British music night and a Brands Festival showcasing some of the UK’s finest labels. The week aims to raise the profile of the UK’s unique characteristics in one of China’s fastest-growing and most dynamic cities. The series of events demonstrates the UK’s strengths as a creative knowledge-based economy, the home of some of the world’s finest products and service providers, and a country that warmly welcomes Chinese visitors and investment.

For the business community, a series of industry-specific events focused on particular sectors, such as trade, manufacturing, and scientific innovation, will promote collaboration between the two countries. A ‘UK Education Day’ on Sunday 26th will introduce potential students to the UK’s world-class schools and universities.

Urbanisation is a special focus of the week. The British Ambassador will visit the offices of British company Atkins to learn more about their Pearl of the North project, a 111-storey skyscraper which will be one of China’s tallest buildings. A green development workshop for British and Chinese policy makers and businesses will explore approaches to building truly sustainable and future-proof cities.

British Ambassador to China Sir Sebastian Wood said:

I am delighted to officially launch UK in Shenyang Week. The UK is committed to engaging with China’s dynamic and fast-growing provinces, and this week is a symbol of our commitment. I believe the UK has a great deal to offer Shenyang. From arts and design to science and education, the events across this week are designed to introduce the modern, creative, and fun aspects of the UK. I hope you will learn something new about the UK, and that you will be inspired to come to the UK to experience this for yourselves.

UK in Shenyang Week’s focus on creativity will lead into the GREAT Festival of Creativity in Shanghai next year. The week of events in Shenyang is supported by the British Embassy Beijing, the China Britain Business Council, and the Shenyang Municipal Government and is sponsored by Rolls Royce, Henglong, Caissa, Northern Ireland Bureau China, Aston Martin, Atkins, and the Grand Hyatt Shenyang. The Week runs from 14-26 October 2014. For more details, follow the British Embassy’s weibo account or Shenyang Daily’s microsite here.
